Lean Healthcare: Reducing Patient Wait Times via Toyota Production System Principles

Long wait times within healthcare systems help to increase patient dissatisfaction, staff burnout, and poor quality of care. This article discusses how the Toyota Production System(TPS)especially the Lean methods can be applied in healthcare to simplify the processes and reduce delays. Despite the overwhelming evidence of the efficiency of Lean in manufacturing, its use in healthcare is still poor, even though it is applicable in healthcare. Case studies, such as Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital, show that there were tremendous improvements concerning reductions in emergency department wait times, reduced by one-third, by process redesign, and value stream mapping. The results indicate that Lean can cut waiting time by as much as 62.3, improve patient safety and create large cost savings, such as 1.3 million a year. Altogether, Lean provides a resource-based model of healthcare organizations, that is resource-bound but with high scalability and sustainability, which is based on the respect-for-people philosophy of TPS.
